Managing High Conflict Personalities

Some people are toxic and their behaviour will make you feel crazy. Creating conflict is a behaviour that runs through their life. Every small dispute, disagreement or difference is escalated beyond reason. People with High Conflict Personalities (HCPs) have a pattern of high-conflict behavior that is not helped by common healthy communication strategies.

One of the most common signs that you are dealing with an HCP is that they constantly escalate conflict rather than work to resolve it. Other behaviours are:

  • Blaming others

  • All-or-nothing thinking

  • Unmanaged emotions

  • Extreme behaviours

  • Lack of awareness of the impact of their behaviour

They can be rigid, angry, attacking, criticising, lying, spreading rumors, manipulative, self-absorbed, attention-getting, self-sabotaging, and sometimes violent. Most people respond to this behavior by giving negative feedback, criticising, lecturing or threatening the HCP - none of which work.

This coaching is based on the work of therapist, lawyer and author Bill Eddy. You will learn skills to effectively deal with HCP behaviour. Skills such as:

  • Calming yourself in interactions

  • Setting clear boundaries

  • Closing down futile conversations

  • Saying what you want

  • Setting limits on aggressive, self-serving and irrational behaviour

Whether you are a manager, partner, or relative of someone with conflict escalating behaviours, HCP coaching will help you create boundaries and save your sanity.
